The Unionville Tennis Club is a large and busy tennis club with a very diversified membership. In a typical year we have a total membership between 1,000 and 1,300 people. This diversity is with respect to both the playing interest of the membership as well as their age, stage of life and occupation. Each year our membership is broken down with about 45% consisting of members under 18 years of age (Juniors) and 55% being those older than 18 who are classified either as Adults or Students.
There are a number of results netting from this diversity. The two most prominent being that offering a balanced program to meet as many needs as possible is a perpetual challenge and UTC is busy through a wide range of times. In an attempt to provide balance we, as a club, try to ensure that through each week there are opportunities for every group to access courts for the tennis programming, or playing opportunities that they want. We also attempt to let everyone know what is happening at which times of the week, and when. For example, certain groups have some priority at certain times of the week. This is done to try to avoid, to the extent that it is possible, disappointing members who arrive at the club for a game of tennis, only to discover that an organized program is occupying a substantial number of the courts and random courts are scarce.
UTC has nine tennis courts, and as a rule of thumb we always try to ensure that at least three are available for random, non-programmed play. However, having said that, there are from time to time special events that prevent us from providing this minimum number of courts. These events are typically well publicized in advance, both through our Web site, newsletter and with posters in the clubhouse. These special events aside, the following summarizes general court usage, week to week at UTC.
Sunday
The club sponsors a men's doubles drop-in round robin using up to five courts every Sunday morning from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and a ladies doubles drop-in Round Robin from 10am-noon (up to 5 courts). It is also common that one court is available to the club pros with three courts dedicated to random play. From 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., four courts are used for junior lessons. The balance of every Sunday is dedicated to random play. The only exception being that from time to time some courts may be required on a Sunday evening for league matches that have been rained out on their regular night.
Weekday Mornings
Virtually every weekday morning has up to six courts being used for some organized program, such as women's intercounty and house leagues or round robins. There are typically three courts available for random play.
Weekday Early Afternoon
These times are dedicated to random play through May, June and the Fall. During July and August four courts are typically used for junior lesson programs.
Weekday Late Afternoon
From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., junior members have priority on the courts Mondays-Thursdays. During May and June two - six courts are used for junior group lessons with the balance available for junior random play. Adults may be assigned a court during these times, but only if there are no junior members waiting for courts.
Weekday Evenings
Adult and student members have priority weekday evenings (Monday-Thursdays) with the courts being utilized in a variety of ways as noted below. Juniors may book a court at this time, but only if there are no adults waiting for a court.
Monday night is for random play, with the exception of May and June when two courts are used for adult group lessons.
Tuesday and Thursday nights are for inter-club league play. Depending on whether we are hosting one or two teams, we will use between four and six courts for league play with the balance available for random play.
Wednesday night has six courts used for an adult social round robin with the balance of the courts available for random play.
Friday night is also for random play, with again two courts being used for adult group lessons during May and June.
Saturday Morning
This is also junior priority time with adult booking rules similar to weekdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. From May to early July, we typically have three to six courts being used for junior league play with the balance for junior random play. From mid-July onward the courts are entirely for junior random play.
Saturday Afternoon
This is random play time for all members. However, through May and June, we may use up to two courts for junior lesson programs.
Saturday Evenings
Again, these are entirely for random play.
We hope that this has been of some guidance, particularly to new members and to those who have a predominant interest in random play. If you have any questions, please contact the Courts Director via e-mail at courts@unionvilletennisclub.com.
